The concept of "Save yourself before saving others" is one that I have encountered frequently, even during my non-Christian days. However, I have found it to be one of the most flawed ideas I have come across. It does suggest that we should prioritize our own needs and well-being above all else. Yet, life is filled with challenges that make it nearly impossible for any individual to save themselves, and it is unlikely that we will ever feel fully ready to extend a helping hand. During moments of struggle, it is natural to desire to save ourselves. However, we must recognize the limitations of this desire. We cannot conquer life's obstacles alone, no matter how diligently we strive to save ourselves.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV): "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
Instead, we are called to approach life with humility, placing a higher value on others than on ourselves, and considering their interests alongside our own. It is true that not everyone may reciprocate our efforts, but we can find peace in knowing that genuine connections flourish when grounded in shared values. This perspective has allowed me to cultivate authentic relationships, gain confidence, and experience reciprocal love even when I believed I wasn't ready. As a result, I have been blessed with an abundance of love and support that surrounds me, enabling me to overcome my struggles.
Lord Father, may we find strength in knowing that our journey towards selflessness is not in vain, for it is through our sincere acts of service that we reflect the love and grace of God. Let him guide us as we navigate life's challenges, empowering us to extend genuine care and support to those around us.
